The book
When famine empties his village and school fees put a classroom out of reach, fourteen-year-old William Kamkwamba goes to the library instead — and from a physics book he can barely read, bicycle parts, and a junkyard dynamo, he builds a windmill that lights his family's house.
William Kamkwamba's memoir, written with journalist Bryan Mealer, earns every superlative attached to it: the famine chapters are unflinching about what 2001–02 did to Malawi, and the windmill chapters are genuine engineering — measured, wired, and tested, failure by failure, on the page. For a homeschool it is close to a mission statement: a learner, a library, and stubbornness producing light. The engineering is checkable, the history is lived, and the hero is a teenager the reader watches think.

Running it as a unit
