The grade 8 homeschool book list
8 books, about 65 hours of reading, over roughly 12 weeks at four days a week. Each one is here to do a job the other seven cannot.
Books sit in the 900-1200L band, up from the 850-1080L of grade 7, and the last band before adult reading. The eight jobs do not change from year to year. The difficulty they are filled at does, which is how a child meets the same range of reading every year at a level they are ready for.
6 of the 8 are literature and 2 are informational, so a year is never all stories or all facts. Between them the eight carry 6 comprehension skills: finding evidence, theme & main idea, character & plot, vocabulary in context, text structure, point of view.

- Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell — Stamina & volume, 1000L. Eighteen years alone — sustained interior narration with almost no dialogue.
- Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery — Literary language, 970L. Long paragraphs, Victorian vocabulary, and comedy built from sentence rhythm.
- The Raven and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe — Poetry & prosody, 900L. Sound doing the work of meaning: metre, rhyme and an unreliable speaker, read closely.
- A Wonder Book by Nathaniel Hawthorne — Folklore & myth, 900L. Greek myth retold by a frame narrator who editorialises — two voices to separate.
- The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan — Science & nature, 900L. Narrative nonfiction that follows four meals back to the soil, with real ecology behind the story.
- The Landing of the Pilgrims by James Daugherty — Biography & history, 900L. Source-driven narrative history with visible authorial framing.
- I Heard the Owl Call My Name by Margaret Craven — Mirror & window, 900L. A young vicar among the Kwakwaka'wakw. Mortality and cultural humility.
- Animal Farm by George Orwell — Stretch text, 1170L. Political allegory that only works if you read the second meaning.
