The grade 6 homeschool book list
8 books, about 67 hours of reading, over roughly 12 weeks at four days a week. Each one is here to do a job the other seven cannot.
Books sit in the 780-980L band, up from the 700-900L of grade 5, and below the 850-1080L your child moves into next year. The eight jobs do not change from year to year. The difficulty they are filled at does, which is how a child meets the same range of reading every year at a level they are ready for.
6 of the 8 are literature and 2 are informational, so a year is never all stories or all facts. Between them the eight carry 6 comprehension skills: finding evidence, theme & main idea, character & plot, vocabulary in context, text structure, point of view.

- Island of Fire by Lisa McMann — Stamina & volume, 810L. Mid-series fantasy that sustains a long arc in an already familiar world.
- The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien — Literary language, 800L. Invented languages, songs, and an intrusive narrator. Dense but propulsive.
- The Song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow — Poetry & prosody, 900L. A narrative poem: metre and imagery carrying a whole story, so poetry is read the way a novel is.
- The Blue Fairy Book by Andrew Lang — Folklore & myth, 850L. The Victorian collection most later retellings descend from.
- Bomb: The Race to Build and Steal the World's Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin — Science & nature, 920L. Physics, espionage and ethics braided into narrative nonfiction.
- The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer — Biography & history, 860L. Engineering under scarcity — memoir doubling as an applied-science text.
- Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor — Mirror & window, 800L. Depression-era Mississippi. Injustice shown, never explained away.
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis — Stretch text, 940L. Allegory — the first book that asks what a story is also about.
