The grade 5 homeschool book list
8 books, about 86 hours of reading, over roughly 12 weeks at four days a week. Each one is here to do a job the other seven cannot.
Books sit in the 700-900L band, up from the 600-820L of grade 4, and below the 780-980L your child moves into next year. The eight jobs do not change from year to year. The difficulty they are filled at does, which is how a child meets the same range of reading every year at a level they are ready for.
6 of the 8 are literature and 2 are informational, so a year is never all stories or all facts. Between them the eight carry 6 comprehension skills: finding evidence, theme & main idea, character & plot, vocabulary in context, text structure, point of view.

- The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart — Fluency & volume, 700L. A long puzzle novel that builds stamina without raising sentence difficulty.
- Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder — Literary language, 720L. Plain declarative prose loaded with vanished domestic vocabulary.
- The Crossover by Kwame Alexander — Poetry & prosody, 750L. Told entirely in verse, where line breaks do the work punctuation usually does.
- Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne — Folklore & myth, 900L. Greek myth in nineteenth-century prose — two kinds of difficulty at once.
- Home Geography for Primary Grades by C. C. Long — Science & nature, 700L. Physical geography built from what a child can observe, then named — expository text with real structure.
- Who Was Albert Einstein? by Jess Brallier — Biography & history, 900L. A life told as a sequence of questions nobody could answer yet — biography carrying real science vocabulary.
- Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai — Mirror & window, 700L. A Vietnamese refugee's year in Alabama, in verse. Language loss made legible.
- Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson — Stretch text, 800L. Sudden loss handled without consolation — emotionally demanding.
