The grade 4 homeschool book list
8 books, about 89 hours of reading, over roughly 12 weeks at four days a week. Each one is here to do a job the other seven cannot.
Books sit in the 600-820L band, up from the 450-700L of grade 3, and below the 700-900L your child moves into next year. The eight jobs do not change from year to year. The difficulty they are filled at does, which is how a child meets the same range of reading every year at a level they are ready for.
6 of the 8 are literature and 2 are informational, so a year is never all stories or all facts. Between them the eight carry 6 comprehension skills: finding evidence, theme & main idea, character & plot, vocabulary in context, text structure, point of view.
The grade 4 books
- The Wild Robot by Peter Brown — Fluency & volume, 600L. Short chapters, a strong hook, and two sequels waiting. Built for momentum.
- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett — Literary language, 700L. Long sentences, dialect, and description that rewards slow reading.
- The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning — Poetry & prosody, 780L. A narrative poem, so plot carries the metre and the verse stays approachable.
- Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin — Folklore & myth, 700L. Chinese folk tales nested inside a quest narrative.
- The Burgess Seashore Book for Children by Thornton W. Burgess — Science & nature, 700L. Tide-pool ecology with real taxonomy — expository writing in a story frame.
- Who Was Joan of Arc? by Pam Pollack — Biography & history, 600L. A life inside a war: motive, consequence, and historical distance.
- Number the Stars by Lois Lowry — Mirror & window, 670L. Occupied Denmark through a child's eyes, with courage made concrete.
