The grade 3 homeschool book list
8 books, about 80 hours of reading, over roughly 12 weeks at four days a week. Each one is here to do a job the other seven cannot.
Books sit in the 450-700L band, up from the 300-550L of grade 2, and below the 600-820L your child moves into next year. The eight jobs do not change from year to year. The difficulty they are filled at does, which is how a child meets the same range of reading every year at a level they are ready for.
6 of the 8 are literature and 2 are informational, so a year is never all stories or all facts. Between them the eight carry 6 comprehension skills: finding evidence, theme & main idea, character & plot, vocabulary in context, text structure, point of view.

- When We Were Very Young by A. A. Milne — Poetry & prosody, 650L. Real verse — metre and rhyme a child can hear. Ideal for reading aloud.
- Journey to the West 1 by Wu Cheng'en — Folklore & myth, 700L. A cornerstone of Chinese literature, widening the canon beyond European tales.
- The Burgess Bird Book for Children by Thornton W. Burgess — Science & nature, 600L. Field-guide knowledge in narrative form — a Charlotte Mason nature-study staple.
- Who Was Marie Curie? by Megan Stine — Biography & history, 600L. A scientist's life told as a sequence of problems, with domain vocabulary in context.
