The grade 2 homeschool book list
8 books, about 39 hours of reading, over roughly 12 weeks at four days a week. Each one is here to do a job the other seven cannot.
Books sit in the 300-550L band, up from the 100-400L of grade 1, and below the 450-700L your child moves into next year. The eight jobs do not change from year to year. The difficulty they are filled at does, which is how a child meets the same range of reading every year at a level they are ready for.
6 of the 8 are literature and 2 are informational, so a year is never all stories or all facts. Between them the eight carry 6 comprehension skills: finding evidence, theme & main idea, character & plot, vocabulary in context, text structure, point of view.
The grade 2 books
- Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary — Fluency & volume, 500L. Entry to a long series, which is the single best driver of reading volume at this age.
- The Velveteen Rabbit & Other Stories by Margery Williams — Literary language, 400L. Early exposure to figurative language and a register older than everyday speech.
- Now We Are Six by A. A. Milne — Poetry & prosody, 500L. Real verse, in metre and rhyme a child can hear, about a child exactly this age. Made for reading aloud.
- The Nutcracker Story by E. T. A. Hoffman — Folklore & myth, 420L. A named literary fairy tale — story-within-story structure and a canonical reference.
- Backpack Bear's Reptiles, Amphibians, & Fish Book by Alice O. Shepard — Science & nature, 551L. First real nonfiction: classification, labelled diagrams, and animals grouped by what they are.
- Follow the Drinking Gourd by Jeanette Winter — Biography & history, 630L. A song that was really a map north. History a seven-year-old can hold on to, because it is carried by a story.
- The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi — Mirror & window, 400L. A Korean girl decides whether to keep her name. Identity from the inside.
- Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo — Stretch text, 520L. Sustained first-person voice, and grief handled gently.
