The grade 1 homeschool book list
8 books, about 17 hours of reading, over roughly 12 weeks at four days a week. Each one is here to do a job the other seven cannot.
Books sit in the 100-400L band, the first band, where decoding is still becoming automatic, and below the 300-550L your child moves into next year. The eight jobs do not change from year to year. The difficulty they are filled at does, which is how a child meets the same range of reading every year at a level they are ready for.
6 of the 8 are literature and 2 are informational, so a year is never all stories or all facts. Between them the eight carry 6 comprehension skills: finding evidence, theme & main idea, character & plot, vocabulary in context, text structure, point of view.
The grade 1 books
- Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel — Fluency & volume, 300L. Short, repetitive chapters at a controlled level — the bridge from decodable text to real books.
- The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss — Literary language, 100L. Spare, deliberate sentences that carry a full narrative arc in under a hundred words.
- Read-Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young by Selected by Jack Prelutsky — Poetry & prosody, poetry. Rhyme and metre are the raw material of phonological awareness, at the age it matters most.
- The Little Red Hen by Amy Helfer — Folklore & myth, 200L. A first cumulative folk tale — predictable structure teaches story shape before plot complexity.
- Precipitation by Stephen Schutz — Science & nature, 80L. Earliest informational text: labels, sequence, and cause and effect in the weather cycle.
- George Washington and the General's Dog by Frank Murphy — Biography & history, 380L. A true story small enough for a first reader to finish, about a general who returned his enemy's lost dog.
- Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena — Mirror & window, 400L. A child sees a familiar bus ride through someone else's eyes.
- Henry and Mudge: The First Book by Cynthia Rylant — Stretch text, 450L. Just above band — longer sentences and a multi-chapter arc to read across several days.
